2022 Chief Justice Samuel J. Roberts Scholarship

Jacob D. Fleming, who earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science degree from Allegheny College, is the 2022 successful aspirant for the prestigious scholarship, administered and awarded for the Roberts Family by the Erie County Bar Foundation. Fleming, of Erie, will attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

ECBA member, Christine McClure received the prestigious Anne X. Alpern Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Women in the Profession Division on May 11.

Administrative Secretary

An Administrative Secretary is need in the Erie County Public Defender's Office.

General office management such as answering phones and speaking with potential clients to determine whether they qualify for services, assisting attorneys, and performing clerical work that includes maintaining records, paying invoices, and entering data in addition to a variety of other tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities

As may be required by department head, performs any or all of the following duties:
Maintain client confidentiality;
Screen and assist all walk-in applicants at the Public Defender's Office, including the determination of eligibility of services;
Assist in the preparation of legal documents including motions, petitions, orders and briefs prepared for the Court of Common Pleas and the Pennsylvania appellate courts;
Receive and distribute incoming mail for the department, as well as processing outgoing mail;
Support attorneys and investigative staff by typing correspondence, answering phone calls and filing and retrieving documents and information when necessary;
Receive, record and distribute to the appropriate attorney or investigator messages, information requests and/or complaints received via phone, email or in person;
Create case files for the attorneys;
Schedule/confirm preliminary hearing dates for the attorneys;
Make and schedule office appointments for the attorneys;
Assist, as needed, the preparation of the daily Court Schedule;
Assist Magisterial District Judge Offices and Court Administration in identifying Public Defender clients;
Keep accurate calendars for the attorneys;
Participate as a courier between the Department and the Court House;
Other related work as required, the above statements reflect the general details considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the job.
Order office supplies;
Create requisitions/pay authorizations;
Pay bills;
Help prepare budget and track finances;
Submit employee mileage for reimbursement.

Essay Contest for 5th and 6th Graders

The Courts, Community, and Rule of Law Committee of the Judicial Council of the Third Circuit announced today that it is hosting an essay contest for 5th and 6th grade classes focused on civics, citizenship, and the concept of the “Rule of Law.” The essay prompt is: “What does the Rule of Law mean to you and to our country?”
